Three benefits of a single-page application
You can develop a web application in two different mechanisms; Traditional web application and Single-page application. When you search over the internet, you find many Software-as-a-service (SAAS) application products working similar to a Desktop application. Responsiveness, real-time events tracking, and good performance are three main benefits of a single-page application.
You should, however, understand that creating a single-page application is not easy to develop, and it requires in-depth knowledge of many layers of technologies. Otherwise, you couldn’t rip the benefits of it. Angular framework and React.js library are two great players in the field of single-page application development.
What is a single-page application?
You can define a single-page application as similar to a Desktop application.
In a single-page application, the browser doesn’t render the whole page by a user action. Instead, it changes the page section according to the server response. The application requires the back-end API for accessing all the information.
In a traditional application, the browser renders the whole page for a user action. It requests the server to process action then, the server responds with a formatted Html page. And browser renders it again.
Many business owners have an idea for a SAAS product and catering to their customers. And maybe, many customers requested you to create a web application similar to a Desktop application. They miss responsiveness, quick data update, and no waiting time to use any feature. And a single-page application overcomes these obstacles, and these are three main benefits of it as well.
Improved user responsiveness
A user expects the outcome in a short time rather than waiting for it. In a traditional web application, a user takes action and waits for the page to reload. On the other hand, a single-page application updates a small portion of the page and improves responsiveness.
The user interface design has transformed, and its complexity has increased to the next level. And you don’t want to make your customers wait for the output of the action.
There are different ways to improve responsiveness, and developers employed them in the past. Single-page application frameworks - Angular or React.js – have many inbuilt features that increase user interface responsiveness.
Event-based action and Real-time updates
How many times have you used social sites? Almost all the time. Daily. You do notice that these sites employ many real-time updates and event-based features.
Your project may support the following features;
- Instant messaging
- Push notification
- Automatic feed update
And the single-page application makes it easy to integrate these features. Its architecture allows the developer to integrate these features easily.
It is possible in the traditional web application by using some hacks because the architecture doesn’t allow it.
Local caching and performance
The single-page application uses local caching extensively, and it boosts its performance directly.
In a traditional web application, the browser needs to download many supporting files – CSS, Javascript, and other files – to render the page. And it takes time to load all of these files, and it results in slow performance. To improve the application performance, the developers used CDN networks or other mechanisms.
On the other hand, a single-page application downloads all these files once, and then it uses them throughout the application execution. It results in a good performance.
Also, local caching is different than downloadable content. It is short-term storage and gets deleted after a short time.
How to develop a single-page application?
There are many steps involved in development. And I couldn’t do justice to each step in a single blog, and therefore I will be writing another blog for them.
But, as a reference for you, I am writing down all the necessary steps;
- You break down your application’s user interface design into many small and reusable components.
- Decide the middle layer framework. There are many frameworks available for the single-page application, and each has its pros and cons. But, my advice is to choose between the Angular framework and React.js library.
- Develop core back-end logic of your application. And it should be abstract so that you could use the same services for a traditional web application, a command-line application, or any other mechanism.
- Develop the back-end API over the core back-end logic. Most people create REST API for accessing the information. Though, you could decide based on your experience and requirements.
- Integrate a middle layer framework and back-end API.
